The Forest Lily is a bulbous plant that is easy to grow in shade or part-shade either in the garden or a pot.
The plants have broad glossy green leaves and grow to about 25cm high by 35cm wide, and their flowers grow on a long stalk that can be 60cm high.
The flowers vary in colour from a very pale pink through to a very dark mauve and sometimes even a white-green colour. In many ways, though not in colour, the flowers resemble those of the red hot poker.
Forest lilies don't tolerate heavy frost, but are fine with light frost. In areas with no frost Forest Lilies are almost evergreen, but in areas in with frost the leaves will tend to die back at the end or Winter and beginning of Spring and will then re-shoot through Summer and Autumn. The main growing period for Forest Lilies is, unusually, the beginning of Winter and in most parts of Australia Winter will be their main flowering season.
The bulbs prefer not to be disturbed once established, but do appreciate some general purpose fertiliser a fews times a year.
The plants on offer are bulbs that are not quite big enough to flower this season, but still big enough to be planted out into your garden and make a nice foliage plant until they flower.

This velthemia bulb arrived in a well packaged box wrapped in moistened newspaper. The overall appearance of the bulb was very good. I would purchase from this nursery again.

The bulbs arrived in great condition, and they looked very healthy. I planted them out the same day, and if they don't do well, it has everything to do with Mother Nature and our hot climate here in Mildura. Can't blame the bulbs, but I do know of "older" gardeners who used to grow them years ago, or their Grandmothers did, and they all survived. it seems like a case of "what's old is new again". Fashion goes in cycles, and that applies equally to plants.
