The Red Tower Ginger is a superb example of a tall growing Costus. It has large, showy red and yellow flowers and tall stems covered in lush tropical foliage.
Originally Costus were classified as part of the ginger (Zingiberaceae) family, although now they have been re-classified into their own family (Costaceae), hence the rather misleading name of Red Tower Ginger. Both families of plants are spectacular and look compatible planted together in tropical gardens.
The Red Tower Ginger grows to about 2 - 3m and prefers part shade. It does look good in pots, provided you can provide adequate water over Spring and Summer and keep it drier over Winter.
Unlike many of the plants that we grow in the Ginger, Heliconia and Costus families, this is one that will tolerate frost so can be grown further South than most of the others.
The plants we supply are bare-rooted rhizomes that should quickly grow to full size in their first full season after planting.
